S-Africa declines US human rights statement

(MENAFN) South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, has strongly criticized a recent US State Department human rights report on the country, calling it “inaccurate and deeply flawed.” The report claims South Africa is moving toward land expropriation targeting Afrikaners and mistreating racial minorities—allegations the government has firmly rejected.

Chrispin Phiri, spokesperson for DIRCO, expressed “profound disappointment” with the report, saying it relies on “a-contextual information and discredited accounts.” He highlighted that the report mischaracterized incidents involving farm worker deaths as extrajudicial killings, despite ongoing judicial proceedings.

Phiri also criticized the report’s treatment of police conduct, noting that it omits the robust investigative processes in place to ensure due process is followed. The government maintains that the report misrepresents the reality of South Africa’s constitutional democracy.
