S-Africa revisions trade deal with US

(MENAFN) South Africa’s government has confirmed that it will present a “generous” revised trade offer to the United States in response to Washington’s 30% unilateral tariffs on South African goods. The offer, approved by Cabinet, is part of a five-point strategy addressing the recent tariff hikes.

Trade, Industry and Competition Minister Parks Tau and Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen announced that a high-level team, including representatives from the Presidency and the two departments, will lead negotiations with the US. While specific details of the revised offer were not disclosed, Steenhuisen described it as “broad, generous, and open,” designed to benefit both countries.

The ministers emphasized that South Africa is also seeking trade agreements beyond the US, looking toward markets such as China, Japan, and the Middle East. They highlighted the importance of not relying solely on one trading partner and of tapping into untapped global opportunities.

Tau noted that the Cabinet is fully involved in diversifying trade partnerships, including strengthening regional ties under the AfCFTA and building relations with European partners to expand trade, investment, and supply-chain participation.

The government’s overall response to the US tariffs centers on five elements: negotiating tariff reductions, exploring alternative markets, implementing economic support for affected companies and workers, defending against import surges and dumping, and leveraging domestic demand through local consumers, private sector, and government interventions.
