African Union Forces Kill Over Fifty Militants

(MENAFN) The African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) has confirmed that more than 50 Al-Shabaab fighters were eliminated during fierce combat on Friday in the southern Somali town of Bariire.

In a statement issued by AUSSOM on Sunday, the coordinated operation—carried out alongside the Somali National Armed Forces (SNAF)—focused on locations controlled by the al-Qaeda-affiliated group in Bariire, a key agricultural center situated 73 kilometers southwest of the capital city, Mogadishu.

AUSSOM dismissed recent reports from the media that alleged its forces incurred substantial losses during the confrontation.

Ambassador El Hadji Ibrahima Diene, Special Representative of the African Union Commission Chairperson (SRCC) for Somalia, emphasized that AU and Somali troops “are determined to recapture Bariire town and other territories still under Al-Shabaab control to ensure lasting peace and security for the people of Somalia.”

The al-Qaeda-linked insurgent groups, especially Al-Shabaab, have been regularly launching assaults across various African nations, including those in the Sahel region—Burkina Faso, Mali, as well as Somalia in East Africa.

This organization continues to execute raids, bombings, and targeted killings aiming to undermine the Somali government and regional security frameworks.
